Entrevista a una afiliada: Michelle Schroeder-Gardner de Making Sense of Cents

What would you do if you had studied for years to become a professional in your chosen field, then finally scored a great job in the area you’re interested in only to realize you had absolutely no passion for it.

I experienced a very similar feeling to that of our next affiliate interview guest. I studied my butt off, achieved great grades, and slipped into an enviable corporate job, but after a few years, I just found that it wasn’t what I wanted out of life.

Nowadays she’s actually pretty close to the industry she studied (finance), just probably not in the way she thought it would end up when she left school.

I’m really excited to share our interview with Michelle Schroeder-Gardner of the well known personal finance/lifestyle blog El sentido de los céntimos.

1. Empezaste tu blog de finanzas personales Making Sense of Cents hace unos siete años, justo después de la crisis financiera. Tenías una gran deuda estudiantil, pero incluso con todo en contra, conseguiste convertirlo en un blog de gran éxito e ingresos a tiempo completo (¡y más allá!). It was definitely a passion project. I didn’t create my blog with the intention of making money blogging, and I had no long-term goals for it. It was all just a hobby and an outlet. I then realized how much I loved blogging and realized that it was for me, so now I’m a full-time blogger! I went full-time in October of 2013 and I haven’t looked back once. Blogging has completely changed my life for the better, and it’s something that I recommend everyone try if they’re interested.

I definitely never thought I would become a blogger, and it’s always funny and interesting to think about how much life has changed in just a short amount of time.

2. Ahora puedes obtener unos ingresos estupendos con el blog, pero imagino que al principio te habría dado bastante miedo dejar tu trabajo de analista financiero a tiempo completo para dedicarte a esto. ¿Tenías miedo de dedicarte a esto a tiempo completo?

Yes, I definitely had some fears. Since I started my blog entirely as a hobby, I didn’t really know what I was doing. I learned a lot through trial and error, and boy, was there a lot of error! I had a good full-time job, but I had no passion for it. I absolutely dreaded nearly every single day, whether it be Monday or the weekend. That job just wasn’t for me, but it was stable, so it was hard to leave it. Plus, I went to college and had three college degrees, so leaving a stable full-time job just seemed crazy to everyone around me!

3. ¿Cuáles son algunas de las ventajas de ser bloguero en tu nicho frente a las desventajas del nicho?

I don’t really see any disadvantages. I don’t ever force myself to write on a specific topic on Making Sense of Cents. I write about anything and everything that I want to. Yes, you’ll find lots of personal finance articles on my website, but you’ll also find lots of travel, blog, pets, and other types of blog posts there.

4. ¿Cómo utiliza el marketing de afiliación en su sitio web?

Utilizo el marketing de afiliación de muchas formas distintas en mi sitio web. La primera consiste simplemente en ofrecer contenidos de alta calidad a mis lectores y, a partir de ahí, enlazar cuidadosamente a productos y servicios afiliados. You cannot, I repeat CANNOT, just slap affiliate links on your blog and hope to make affiliate income. You have to have some sort of strategy. So many bloggers make this huge mistake and usually lose followers or waste their time because they don’t realize that there is a right way and a wrong way to approach affiliate marketing!

5. ¿Qué es lo que puede señalar que ha hecho en el pasado que realmente tuvo un efecto positivo y duradero en su marketing de afiliación e hizo que sus ingresos despegaran?

I’ve been interested in affiliate marketing nearly since the beginning of when I started my website, but I never thought it was possible before. I always thought you had to have a huge following and a ton of page views in order to be successful with affiliate marketing.

Well, one day I decided to give myself a goal of earning affiliate income, and I worked toward achieving that goal. I started by making a little bit each month, and then it just continued to grow month after month. Now I know that you don’t need a ton of page views or a huge following in order to make a great income through affiliate marketing.

Me encantan los ingresos por afiliación porque pueden parecer bastante pasivos. Puedes crear una sola entrada en tu blog o en las redes sociales y ganar dinero con ella durante años, siempre que la mantengas y sigas generando tráfico. 6. Sé que actualmente estás en proceso de reducir tus horas de trabajo para disfrutar más de la buena vida que has creado. ¿Cuánto tiempo inviertes ahora en tu estrategia de marketing de afiliación en comparación con cuando empezaste?

I’ve never really dedicated too much time to affiliate marketing, even in the beginning. My strategy has always been almost passive, and it’s what I like about it. However, I do still spend a lot of time on my blogging business overall.

7. What’s your number one tip to new affiliate marketers?

My best piece of advice would be to just try! I waited so long to try my hand at affiliate marketing, and I regret waiting so long. Even if you have a low amount of followers or you’re a brand new blogger, you can still be successful at affiliate marketing if you put some work into it.
